BEWARE OF FAKE ALUMNI ASSOCIATION
24 April 2017
Mitrany has received a very disturbing email. People are presenting themselves as the 'Worldwide Association of Notable Alumni (WWANA)', and are trying to make innocent people a member of their so-called organization. Yet, this organization does not exist, and is only after your money. One RUG student has already been approached by these criminals. If they contact you, do hang up the phone. Read more

Yet, this organization does not exist, and is only after your money. One RUG student has already been approached by these criminals. If they contact you, do hang up the phone. Ms Huttinga, student advisor of IRIO in Groningen received a message from a student containing the following:
On March 31st, 2017 I received a phone call from number +(929)302-3420 at 9:55am, Mexico City time. It showed in the screen of my phone as an incoming call from New York, USA. Now it shows as a number from Pakistan! The caller identified herself as Laura Wright from the Worldwide Association of Notable Alumni (WWANA) which was in partnership with RUG for this project. She obtained my details from Facebook. I answered to an advertisement that looked like it was being sponsored by University of Groningen, where I studied in 2012. The advertisement promoted an alumni network from RUG. I left my contact details (mobile phone number and e-mail).
This is their official website: https://www.wwana.com/
Laura’s English was excellent (no Pakistani or Dutch accent). She said she was going to follow up on my application to WWANA. She asked a lot of information regarding my educational background and current job, which I stupidly provided. She also asked about my carrier goals.
After the questionnaire, she said my application was approved and then she sold me a lifetime membership for USD$489, which I refused. Then she offered a 5 years membership for USD$389, which I refused too. Then she offered a 1 year membership for USD$189, which I unfortunately accepted. She took my credit card details and my billing address. She even provided me with a confirmation number #1417085.
She said I would receive an introduction package in my e-mail. She said she will call again to follow up to see if I received the package the week after. Then, she read to me how my profile would look like in their website. As I did not receive anything during that day, I felt suspicious.
Next morning, I called my bank and asked them to cancel the charge. The bank said the charge is in authorization status but, as I provided my details, they cannot cancel the charge. I then proceed to request the cancelation of my credit card. Now I have Googled the website and phone number and they are reported as scam.

GMM 8-21 APRIL
8 April 2017
The Mitrany board 2016-2017 invites all members to the annual General Members Meeting (GMM) of the Mitrany Alumni Network IRIO. In contrast to previous years, the meeting will take place digitally. This entails that the documents concerning the board's strategy and evaluation thereof can be found on our webpage, click here. We invite all members to send us their comments and questions to mitrany@rug.nl.
The format was changed to a digital GMM in order to allow a larger share of our members to have the opportunity to inquire about Mitrany's activities and strategy as well as to share with us their ideas and input for future activities, so that Mitrany can develop and improve taking into account all members wishes. Since our members are geographically dispersed among many different cities inside and outside the Netherlands we hope this format will give more people the opportunity to provide us with feedback on the network and its policies
We ask you kindly to send us your question and comments before the 21st of April 2017, 11:59PM and we will aim to reply to each question within two weeks. The Mitrany board 2016-2017 is looking forward to receiving your comments and feedback.

Europe Lecture 2014
In light of the growing instability in Europe's neighbourhood and the European Union's aspiration to become a full-fledged actor in international peacekeeping, the theme of this year's Europe Lecture 'Europe in the World: Peace and Security' is of major interest.
How can Europe survive in an Asian century? What is the importance and meaning of Europe in the world? How should Europe address the international challenges that lie ahead, considering the recent and ongoing power shifts in the global realm?
Dr. Vaira Vīķe-Freiberga is the former president of Latvia and, to this day, involved in global political affairs through various organisations. When Latvia acceded to both the EU and NATO in 2004 many attributed that success in part to her leadership.
Prof. Jonathan Holslag is co-founder of the Brussels Institute of Contemporary China Studies and lecturer on international relations at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel. He is one of the most prominent European specialists in Asian affairs and a rising star in the field of geopolitics.
The lecture will be moderated by Tom de Bruijn, alderman of The Hague and former permanent representative at the EU.
Practical information
Date: Tuesday, October 28th, 2014 - 17h00
Venue: Kloosterkerk, The Hague (Lange Voorhout 4)
Tickets: € 12,50 (students € 7,50)
